1.1 Background of the Study
Community participation in governance is vital for fostering transparency, accountability, and inclusive development. However, many communities in Nigeria face challenges in engaging citizens in governance processes due to apathy, lack of awareness, and mistrust in political systems. Films, as influential communication tools, have been used to encourage civic engagement by illustrating the benefits of active participation and the consequences of indifference (Adewale & Usman, 2023). In Bwari Local Government Area, FCT, films serve as a medium to educate and inspire citizens to take an active role in governance, addressing issues such as voter apathy, corruption, and public accountability (Okonkwo & Danjuma, 2024). This study investigates the role of films in promoting community participation in governance within Bwari.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Low levels of community participation in governance remain a significant challenge in Bwari, undermining democratic processes and development. Despite the potential of films to inspire civic engagement, their impact in this context is underexplored (Garba & Bello, 2023). This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of films in encouraging active citizen participation in governance in Bwari.
